Side Transfer

Side is a neighborhood of the Manavgat district of Antalya province.


The name "Side" means "Pomegranate" in Anatolian language. This feature and the information obtained from some inscriptions in the document show that the history of Side dates back to the Hittites. However, it is also said that Side, one of the oldest settlements in Anatolia, was founded before the 7th century BC. During the Anatolian history, Side went through the same stages as the other Pamphylia cities. The Greeks came to Side during the 7th century BC migrations. According to the inscriptions, they spoke a language specific to the city until the 3rd century BC. This language, which is still not fully deciphered, is an Indo-European language. Side came under the rule of the Lydians in the first half of the 6th century BC and the Persians in 547-546 BC. The city, which developed under Persian rule, surrendered to Alexander in 334 BC. After Alexander's death, Antigonus was archived on March 6, 2008 on the Wayback Machine (323-304). Ptolemies (301-215). After 215 BC, it came under the control of the Kingdom of Syria. The city, which lived its heyday thanks to the powerful war and trade fleets of the Ptolemies in the 2nd century BC, was rebuilt and turned into a science and culture center during this period. Side, which was left to the Kingdom of Pergamum with the Peace of Apameia in 188 BC, preserved its independence together with the Eastern Pamphylia region, and attained prosperity and wealth with its large trade navy. The city, which was under Roman rule after 78 BC, became the commercial center of the region in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. There was a rich and bright period, especially provided by the slave trade. During the 2nd century it was a center of science and culture. VII of the Syrian kings. Antiochus was educated here before he took the throne. When he became king (138) BC, he took the name Sidetes. The people of Side, who believed and worshiped many gods such as Athena and Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Asklepios, Hegeia, Kharits, Demeter, Dionisos, Hermes until this period, started to become Christian in the 4th century. When Side became the Pamphylia Metropolis (Episcopal Center) in the 5th century, it lived its heyday in the 5th and 6th centuries. This development ended with Arab raids between the 7th and 9th centuries. During the excavations, traces of a great fire and many earthquakes were found. Arab invasion, natural disasters caused the city to be abandoned. In the 12th century, Arab geographer El Idrisi shows this place as a dead city and defines it as Burnt Antalya. According to İdrisi, the people of the city migrated from Side towards 1150, and Side was completely evacuated in the 12th century. In the 13th century, the Seljuks were under the rule of the Hamitoğulları Principality and the Tekelioğulları in the 14th century, and there was no settlement in these periods. In the 15th century, it definitely joined the Turkish lands. However, since neither the Ottomans nor the Seljuks lived in Side, there are no artifacts from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods on the peninsula.


Cretan Muslims fleeing due to the Greek revolt in 1895-97, a village was established at the tip of the peninsula and immigrants from Crete were settled here. The small village that forms the core of today's neighborhood has covered the entire peninsula over time. The settlement, which later took the name "Selimiye", was merged with Kemer village with the decision on 21 December 1987 and became a town under the name of "Side".
