Aydın is a province of Turkey and the twentieth most populous city. It is one of the most developed provinces in the Aegean Region in terms of tourism and agriculture. It is surrounded by İzmir in the north, Manisa in the northeast, Denizli in the east, Muğla in the south, and the Aegean Sea in the west. With a population of 1,134,031 as of 2022, it is the third largest province in the Aegean Region. It has 17 districts.

The old names of Aydın were Tralleis and Güzelhisar, and its name was changed to Aydın during the Aydınoğulları principality, which was established in the 14th century during the Anatolian Principalities. Herodotus said about the province of Aydın, “It is the place under the most beautiful sky and the most beautiful climate that we know on earth”. Evliya Çelebi said, “Oil flows from its mountains and honey flows from its plains”.

Intellectual; It was the home of various civilizations and were prominent cities such as Aphrodisias, Miletus, Didyma, Nysa, Priene, and Magnesia in Antiquity. Today's Aydın, together with the city of Tralleis, developed during the Hittites in 2500 BC, and experienced its heyday in the 8th century in the time of Lydia. Along with the Seljuk Dynasty, it was equipped with the cultural assets and artifacts of the Turkish civilization.

During the Aydınoğulları period, the name of the city was Aydın Güzelhisarı, and later it was named Aydın. In 1811, it became the center of the province, which included the sanjaks of Izmir, Saruhan (Manisa), Menteşe (Mugla), Antalya and Isparta. After the War of Independence, Aydın became an independent province in 1923.

With the law no. 3392 enacted in 1987, Buharkent and İncirliova were established, and with the law no. 3644 enacted in 1990, Karpuzlu, Köşk and Yenihisar districts were established. The name of Yenihisar district was changed to Didim in 1997 with the law numbered 4235.[8] With the law numbered 6360 enacted in 2012, the central district was abolished and the district of Efeler was established with the same borders. Again with the same law, a metropolitan municipality with provincial administrative borders was established in Aydın and after the 2014 Turkish local elections, the metropolitan municipality started its work.
