Didim, or Yenihisar with its old name, is a touristic district of Aydın. It is in the form of a peninsula bounded by the province of Muğla in the east, Güllük Bay and Akbük Bay, the Aegean Sea in the west and south, Bafa Lake and Büyük Menderes in the north. Its area is 402 km². According to the results of the 2022 census[2], there are 16 neighborhoods in the district where 97,000 people live.

The first settlement traces of Didim district date back to the Neolithic Period (8000 BC). In the 16th century BC, the existence of Mycenaean, Cretan and later Aka colonies is seen. After the Persians, Romans and Byzantines, after the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, after the gates of Anatolia were opened to the Turks, this region, which was first called Karia, passed into the hands of the Turks. After the 1st Crusade, it passed into the hands of Byzantium again. With the establishment of the Menteşe Principality in Caria after 1261, Didim and its surroundings were included in this principality.

During the Ottoman Empire, it continued its existence under the name "Yeronda - Yoran". In accordance with the Treaty of Lausanne on March 23, 1924, the refugees from Thessaloniki's Pravuşta region and its villages (Kuçkar, Devekıran) became the first owners of Didim. The Greeks who went from Yoran, on the other hand, established a village in Nea Yeronda, which means New Yoran.

After the 1955 earthquake, Yoran, which was also called "Hisar" among the people, was renamed "Yenihisar" after moving to the disaster houses built by the state. While Didim and its surroundings were a part of Söke district until 9 May 1990, it became a district with Yenihisar being the center, Akbük, Akyeniköy towns and Akköy, Balat, Batıköy, Denizköy and Yalıköy villages and Akbük taken from Milas district with a law published on this date. In 1999, the name of Yenihisar district, which is located in only one place in the world and comes from "Didymaion" as its root, was changed to Didim in order not to tend to name similarity.

The economy of the district is primarily based on tourism and secondarily on agriculture. In the past, tobacco was in the first place among the field products, but after the restrictions on tobacco production, the people stopped growing tobacco. Today, olives and figs are in the first place. Olive oil production has increased in recent years. There are also olive oil factories for its production.

Fishing is another livelihood in the district. There are also fish factories in the district. Animal husbandry is enough to meet the consumption needs, especially small cattle breeding is the leading one.

The economy is positively affected in the district, which is visited by a significant number of tourists during the summer months. Altinkum beach and the Temple of Apollo are very popular with tourists coming to the region.

Turkey's first and only vegan festival, "Didim VegFest" has been celebrated in the district since 2018. The festival is held on the historical road next to the Temple of Apollo. In the festival where vegan delicacies take place, many shows and events are held intertwined with Turkish culture. Visitors from many parts of the world are hosted and a serious contribution is made to the economy of the district.
