Thus, it is understood that the settlement of Tlos spread over a wider geography than any other Lycian city, which is why the term "country" was used for Tlos instead of "city" in Hittite sources. Tlos is the Hellenized version of the name Tlava, which was given to the city by the Lycians, one of the indigenous people of the region. The name of the city is mentioned as Dalava in Hittite documents.
